GP Diagnostic PSA Prostate Cancer Test Pack

What is a PSA Test?
The PSA blood test is one of the main ways, along with a rectal exam, that doctors can look for signs of prostate cancer. The prostate is a small gland that is part of the male reproductive system.  Is the PSA test without flaws? No. It’s possible to get test results showing elevated PSA levels without having prostate cancer. PSA can be raised for lots of other reasons too, meaning a man might get an abnormal result when he doesn’t have cancer.  Higher levels could be a sign of an infection in the prostate or urinary tract, for instance.  At the end of the day, a PSA test provides information that can lead to earlier detection and treatment of prostate cancer — particularly for those with higher risk levels.  If your PSA test result is high for your age or persistently increasing, a rectal examination and imaging tests may be recommended. If you do get a positive result it's best to discuss the result with your Doctor for further investigation.

What is the prostate?
The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and is part of the male reproductive system.
About the size of a walnut, it's located between the penis and the bladder, and surrounds the urethra.

What does a PSA test tell you?
The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in males.

What does the test involve?
The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissue in the prostate, a small gland that sits below the bladder in males.  The PSA test can detect high levels of PSA that may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. However, many other conditions, such as an enlarged or inflamed prostate, also can increase PSA levels. Therefore, determining what a high PSA score means can be complicated.

How does this test work?
The level of PSA is measured in the blood sample.

POSITIVE: If two colour bands are visible and the test band is equal to or stronger than the control band, the PSA concentration in the sample is at or above 4 ng/ml.  Elevated levels (greater than 4ng/ml) may be an important signal of possible prostate disease. This test is designed with a cut off level of 3ng/ml. The test is simple to carry out by obtaining a pin-prick of blood with the finger lancet supplied and adding to the test cassette.

NEGATIVE: Only one colour band appears on the control region or the test band appears but is weaker then the control band.  The PSA concentration of the sample is below the detection sensitivity of 4 ng/ml.

Full instructions are provided with the tests.
