FAQS
How often should I routinely test for STIs?
If you are sexually active, we recommend that you take an STI test once a year, even if you have no symptoms or are in a long-term, monogamous relationship.
You should test more regularly if you:
- have multiple sexual partners
- get tested every 3 months
- are starting a new relationship
- have noticed any STI symptoms
- have had unprotected sex with someone who has or could have an STI
When should I test for STIs?
Most STIs don't show up in a test straight away. This means that you may need to wait a few weeks before a test will be accurate. This time is called the window period.
If you test for an STI too early, you may test negative for the disease even if you have it. Follow these guidelines on when to test to ensure accurate results:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: 2 weeks after exposure
- HIV: 6 weeks after exposure
- Syphilis: 6 weeks after exposure
- Hepatitis B: 12 weeks after exposure
- Hepatitis C: 8 weeks after exposure, but it may take up to 6 months
Why test for STIs?
Many STIs often don’t show any symptoms so the only way to confirm if you have an STI is to get tested. Regular screening is important as it helps detect infections early so treatment can be started immediately if needed. This helps to reduce the risk of serious health complications.
What are the consequences of untreated STIs?
Some curable STIs can be dangerous if they aren’t treated and may lead to significant health issues. This may include infertility, genitourinary cancers and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
How do I get treatment?
If your test results indicate that you have an STI, you must contact your GP for treatment. It's important you avoid all sexual activity until you are given further advice.
